...This color is used as a midtone, and the lightest parts are painted white, while the dark parts are painted dark gray to give a rough tone. In areas that require particularly vivid color, the local color (in this case, a color that is determined by convention in painting, especially religious painting, such as the skin color of the Virgin Mary (a young woman) or a saint (an old man)) is thinly and semi-transparently covered. This sketch is then finished by applying a transparent glaze over it.
