An industrial city in central North Carolina, USA. Population 155,000 (1994). Located on the Piedmont Plateau on the east side of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is the number one tobacco manufacturing city in the USA. Salem was founded in 1766, and Winston was founded in 1849 as the county seat of Forsyth County. In 1913, the two towns merged to form the present name. There are many tobacco factories on the Winston side, but the city also has brewing, clothing, furniture, and electrical appliance factories.
