A region and former province in eastern France. It is mainly composed of hills in the upper Saône River basin, and includes the northwestern slope of the Jura Mountains in the south and the southwestern slope of the Vosges Mountains in the north. It is a historically formed area that corresponds to the three departments of Doubs, Jura, and Haute-Saône, as well as the Belfort district. Its main city is Besançon (the capital of the Doubs department). It is a rural area that has been somewhat underdeveloped in the economically active eastern half of France, and in recent years has experienced a population outflow, with a population density of 68 people per km2 (1993), well below the national average (106 people).
