A US submersible research vessel. Developed by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution with joint funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Completed in 1964. Length 6.6m, width 2.4m, height 3.9m, diameter of pressure sphere for 3 crew members 2.1m, weight in air 13t. Maximum speed 2 knots. In 1966, it retrieved a hydrogen bomb dropped by an American bomber off the coast of Palomares, Spain. During this time, it made 35 dives (average 7 hours per dive, maximum 11 hours) to a depth of 900m. In 1986, it operated the ROV "Jason Jr." in 3960m off the coast of Newfoundland to investigate the interior of the "Titanic".
