A private printing company. British sculptor E. Gill said, "General commercial printing companies work according to orders from clients such as publishers, but private presses select what they print (publish) themselves, do not rely on machinery at all, and strive to give their products an artistic element." In other words, private presses often do not aim for profit like commercial printing companies, but have small printing workshops, select the books they publish themselves, limit the number of copies to be printed, use typefaces specific to the workshop, use special handmade paper, typeset by hand, print by hand using a hand press, and use special and careful binding and binding materials.

私家版印刷所。イギリスの彫刻家E.ギルは〈一般の商業印刷は，出版社など得意先の注文に応じて仕事をするが，プライベート･プレスは印刷(出版)すべきものをみずから選定し，いっさいを機械力に頼らず，製作品に美術的な要素をもつように心がける〉という。すなわち，プライベート･プレスは多くの場合，商業印刷のように営利を目的とせず，小さな印刷工房をもち，みずから出版すべき本を選定し，発行部数を限定，活字は工房特定の書体のものを用い，用紙は特漉の手漉紙を使用，組版は手組み，印刷はハンドプレスによる手刷り，装丁･製本等も材料ともども特殊入念なものとすることをたてまえとする。
