A village in Yoshino District, southwestern Nara Prefecture. Population 875 (1995). It is located on the northern slope of the Kii Mountains, in the upper reaches of the Totsukawa River, and borders Wakayama Prefecture to the west. Surrounded by mountains such as Obakodake (1,344m) and Gomadanyama (1,372m), most of the village area is covered by forest. At an average elevation of 700m, the village is located in a depression between the mountains, and there is a lot of snow in winter. It has a strong connection with the Mount Koya region in Wakayama, and there is a bus service from Mount Koya Station on the Nankai Koya Line. A flood in 1953 destroyed the frozen tofu and chopstick factories, and in 1960 the Kanayabuchi Mine closed, leading to the departure and depopulation of the village.
