samoedy

Japanese: samoedy
samoedy

...The southern group can also include the extinct Kamas, Karagas, Koybar, Motl, Soyot, and Taigi (collectively called the Sayan Samoyedic). In ancient documents they are written as "Samoyadi", "Samogendi", and "Samogeni". The name Samoyedic comes from the modern Russian word samoedy (which can also mean "self-eater"), which was formed in connection with the rumor that they were cannibals, but the original meaning is unknown. One theory is that this is related to the Scandinavian Lapps' self-proclaimed name, Sámi (Saame).
