GPT is an abbreviation for the enzyme glutamic pyruvic transaminase. It is found in large amounts in liver cells and cardiac cells, and is released into the bloodstream due to cardiac and liver disease. Therefore, blood levels of GPT, along with blood levels of GOT, are important in diagnosing these diseases.
