The capital of ancient Macedonia. It was located about 39 km northwest of Salonika (Thessaloniki). It began to flourish after Archelaus established his capital here at the end of the 5th century BC, and developed rapidly under Philip II. Alexander III (the Great) was also born here. After it surrendered to the Romans in 168 BC, it declined into a small provincial city. Archaeological excavations in the 20th century uncovered a building with a colonnade, and the mosaic pattern on its floor, made of natural pebbles of various colors, depicts lion hunting and Dionysus riding a leopard, and is believed to date to the second half of the 4th century BC. It is also known that the entire area was neatly divided by wide streets and had a well-equipped water supply system.
