The oldest minted coins in Japan include the silver coin with a plain chrysanthemum crest (chrysanthemum silver coin) and the copper coin with a plain chrysanthemum crest (copper coin with rice crest), which is thought to have characters representing rice. These are said to have been coins introduced from Korea during the Asuka period.
