Asarum caulescens (English name)

Japanese: フタバアオイ(双葉葵) - フタバアオイ(英語表記)Asarum caulescens
Asarum caulescens (English name)
A perennial plant of the Aristolochiaceae family. It is found in Honshu south of Fukushima Prefecture, growing in the shade of trees in the mountains. The stems creep above ground and take root at the nodes. The leaves are annual, growing in pairs at the end of the stem, with long petioles. The leaf blades are heart-shaped and thin, with long soft hairs on both sides. In spring, a single pale pink-purple flower with a stalk grows horizontally between the leaves. The perianth is tubular but not fused, and has a fissure down to the base. The upper half is recurved and split into three lobes. It is used in the rituals of Kamo-Mioya Shrine and Kamo-Wakeikazuchi Shrine in Kyoto (→Aoi Matsuri), and it is also the Aoi crest of the Tokugawa family.
