… It was around 1910, when the Los Angeles Rafu Shimpo newspaper was taken over by the head of the Asia Trading Company, Inoue Masaru, and others, that the paper began to change into a news-focused general newspaper. In San Francisco, the representative newspaper was the daily newspaper Nichibei The Japanese American News (later Japanese American, a merger of the existing Soko Nihon Shimbun and North American Daily News), which was launched on April 3, 1899 by Abiko Kyutaro (1865-1936) with the slogan "permanent native residence" and a proclaimed goal of "striving for spiritual unity among Japanese people living along the coast." …
