These are ruins of a city in a section of Old Cairo, the old city of Cairo, the capital of Egypt. In the 7th century, Arab general Amr ibn al-As conquered Egypt and established a military base (Misr), which became the birthplace of present-day Cairo. In the second half of the 10th century, it developed into a major commercial city. When the Kingdom of Jerusalem invaded in the 12th century, the Fatimid dynasty themselves burned the city, and it has been in ruins ever since. Al-Fustād. El-Fustād.
