Montreal is a port city located on Montreal Island on the left bank of the St. Lawrence River in southern Quebec, Canada. Its French name is Montréal. It has a population of 1,039,534, and a metropolitan area population of 3,215,665 (2001). It is a representative city of Canada, and is the center of commerce, trade, and finance, as well as a transportation hub where waterways, railways, and air routes converge. It is a river port located 1,600 kilometers inland from the river mouth, and developed as a transit point connecting the Great Lakes region and the Atlantic Ocean. It is Canada's No. 1 trading port, exporting wheat, lumber, dairy products, furs, etc., and is the world's No. 1 exporter of wheat in particular. Various industries are also thriving, including machinery, textiles, electricity, fur manufacturing, and rubber. In addition, because it is a key point for maritime transportation, there are many shipbuilding and ship repair factories along the riverbank and canals. The port has an area of 4,800 hectares and has all kinds of modern port facilities, but its biggest drawback is that it freezes over in winter.

history

In 1535, the French explorer Cartier traveled up the St. Lawrence River and reached Hochelaga, where he named the mountain Mount Royal, and the name of the city was derived from this mountain. Founded by the Frenchman Champlain in 1611, it was a French colony that served as a fur trading center and a base for inland exploration. In 1642, a group led by the Marquis de Maisonnope settled there, and it developed as a French colonial base, but there were constant conflicts with the indigenous Iroquois. As a result of the French and Indian War, it was ceded to Britain in 1760, but even today, 64% of the population is French Canadian, and 18% is British. For this reason, English and French are spoken side by side, but 63% of the citizens are Catholic, and French is the everyday language, making it the center of French Canada. It was also the capital of the United Provinces of Canada from 1844 to 1849. Mount Royal is located in the center of the city, and its vast park is the symbol of the town. The downtown area is well-ordered, and cultural facilities such as libraries, museums, churches, and parks are well-maintained. In terms of education, the British McGill University and the French University of Montreal are famous. Spiritually and culturally, it is the center of French Canada, but the city also has a very active economy, with the Expos (who moved to Washington DC in 2005 and are now the Washington Nationals) of the American major league baseball team (National League) being based in the city after the 1967 World's Fair, and the 21st Olympic Games being held in 1976. 歴史

1535年、フランスの探検家カルチエが、セント・ローレンス川を遡行(そこう)してホシェラガに到達、そこの小山をマウント・ロイヤル（王の山）と名づけたのがモントリオールの発祥であり、町の名称もこの山に由来する。1611年フランス人シャンプランが建設、毛皮の取引中心地、および内陸探検の拠点としてフランスの植民地であった。1642年にメゾンヌープ侯の率いる一団が入植し、フランスの植民基地として発展したが、絶えず先住民のイロコイ人と紛争が起きていた。フレンチ・アンド・インディアン戦争の結果1760年にイギリスに譲渡されたが、現在でもフランス系カナダ人が64％を占め、イギリス系は18％である。このため英語とフランス語が並んで用いられているが、市民の63％はカトリック教徒で、日常語はフランス語が用いられ、フランス系カナダの中心地でもある。また、1844～49年は連合カナダ植民地の首都であった。市内中央にはマウント・ロイヤルがあり、広大な公園は町のシンボルとなっている。ダウンタウンには整然とした市街地が広がり、図書館、博物館、教会、公園などの文化施設もよく整備されている。教育面ではイギリス系のマッギル大学とフランス系のモントリオール大学が有名である。精神的・文化的にはフランス系カナダの中心であるが、1967年開催の万国博覧会を機にアメリカ大リーグ（ナショナル・リーグ）のエクスポズ（2005年にアメリカのワシントンDCへ移転。現ワシントン・ナショナルズ）のフランチャイズが置かれ、76年には第21回オリンピックが開催されるなど、経済活動は非常に活発で、カナダのニューヨークとも称され、第一級の国際都市である。
