Japanese: 降伏文書 - こうふくぶんしょ（英語表記）instrument of surrender

A document in which the defeated nation promises the victorious nation to cease hostilities at the end of a war and to follow the orders of the victorious nation. This is the document that Japan signed with the Allied Powers at the end of World War II. It is different from a peace treaty, which legally determines a complete resolution of the war. On September 2, 1945, on board the American battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japanese Foreign Minister Plenipotentiary Shigemitsu Mamoru and Army Chief of Staff Umezu Yoshijiro signed the Instrument of Surrender, promising the unconditional surrender of the Japanese armed forces, the cessation of hostilities, faithful implementation of the Potsdam Declaration, and the subordination of the Japanese government's sovereignty to the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers.

戦争の終結にあたり，戦敗国が戦勝国に対して敵対行為の中止と，戦勝国の指令に服することを約束する文書。特に第2次世界大戦の終結にあたり日本が連合国に対して調印した文書をいう。法的に戦争関係の全面的解決を定める講和条約とは異なる。日本は 1945年9月2日，東京湾上のアメリカ戦艦『ミズーリ』上で日本側全権外務大臣重光葵，陸軍参謀総長梅津美治郎が降伏文書に調印し，日本軍隊の無条件降伏と敵対行為の中止，ポツダム宣言の誠実な履行，日本政府の統治権の連合国最高司令官への従属などを約した。
