Altai pheasant

...Population: 69,400 (1989). The northern group includes the Tubarals, Cherkans, and Kumanzins, who make their living by reindeer breeding, hunting, and gathering, and the southern group includes the Altai-Kizhi and Telengits, who breed horses, cattle, and sheep, and engage in farming. Since the 17th century, contact with Russians has intensified, and as a result of their intensive missionary work, they have become Russian Orthodox, but the influence of traditional shamanism remains strong.
