1301‐82 A Korean monk from the end of the Goryeo Dynasty, and the founder of the Korean Rinzai sect. His real name was Bohyo. His common surname was Hong, his pen name was Taiko, and his posthumous name was Ensho. He was from Hongju. He entered the Zen sect at the age of 13, and later passed the monk's exam, but abandoned it to focus on his studies. In 1346 he went to Yuan Dynasty, where he was taught the teachings of the 18th Rinzai founder's grandson, Cheongkong. After returning to Korea in 1348, he continued his studies at Myeongwonso in Yangpyeong County and Sosetsuam (Gyeonggi Province). He was converted to the faith of King Gongmin, and in 1356 he became the royal teacher, preaching the Rinzai religious principles in the capital.
