A Korean monk from the end of the Goryeo Dynasty, and the founder of the Korean Rinzai sect. His real name was Bohyo. His common surname was Hong, his pen name was Taiko, and his posthumous name was Ensho. He was from Hongju. He entered the Zen sect at the age of 13, and later passed the monk's exam, but abandoned it to focus on his studies. In 1346 he went to Yuan Dynasty, where he was taught the teachings of the 18th Rinzai founder's grandson, Cheongkong. After returning to Korea in 1348, he continued his studies at Myeongwonso in Yangpyeong County and Sosetsuam (Gyeonggi Province). He was converted to the faith of King Gongmin, and in 1356 he became the royal teacher, preaching the Rinzai religious principles in the capital. He was persecuted by Shinmin, but was appointed national teacher after Shinmin's downfall.

朝鮮,高麗末の僧,朝鮮臨済宗の祖。一名普虚。俗姓は洪,号は太古,諡(おくりな)は円証。洪州の人。13歳で禅宗の門に入り,のち僧科に合格したが,これを捨て修業に努めた。1346年元に行き,臨済宗開祖18代の孫清珙からその法を伝えられ,48年帰国後は楊平郡の迷原荘,小雪庵(京畿道)で修業を重ねた。恭愍(きようびん)王の帰依を受け,56年王師となり,都で臨済宗教理を説法した。辛旽(しんとん)の迫害を受けたが,その失脚後国師に任ぜられた。
