Bugis; Buginese

Japanese: ブギス族 - ブギスぞく(英語表記)Bugis; Buginese
Bugis; Buginese
Inhabitants of the southern part of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The population is estimated at about 3.3 million. They speak an Austronesian language and have the same script as the Makassarese. Before the Dutch rule, the area was dominated by a number of small kingdoms, including the Boni Kingdom, which was influential among the Bugis and fought for a long time against the Makassarese Gowa Kingdom. On the other hand, they were active in trade and piracy for several centuries along with the Makassarese. In 1667, Makassar surrendered to the Dutch, and the Bugis migrated to various parts of the Malay Archipelago. Most of them converted to Islam, which was introduced in the early 17th century, but they also practiced ancestor worship from before that. A village is a collection of 10 to 200 houses, and the majority of the villagers are from a single kinship group, with the head of the group becoming the head of the village. In the past, there were divisions between nobles, commoners, and slaves. They live by agriculture, mainly rice farming, and fishing on the coast. Since ancient times, they have excelled in navigation and traded with the Philippines and throughout Indonesia. Marriage was usually by cousin, decided by the parents, and a bride price was required.
