It is a mammalian animal of the order Artiodactyla and family Cervidae. It is found in Assam, Myanmar (Burma), Cambodia, Hainan Island, etc., and has three subspecies. It has been recorded that it has a head and body length of about 1.8 meters, a body height of 1.07 to 1.2 meters, a weight of 80 to 150 kilograms, and horns up to 1.13 meters. Its coat color varies with the season, being dark brown in winter and yellowish brown in summer. There is also a slight difference in body color between males and females, with females being light brown, while adult males are dark brown to almost black. Calves have white spots. It prefers open shrublands, rivers, and flat land between hills, lives in small groups, and goes out to feed in the early morning and dusk. Its mating season is from March to April, and it gives birth in the fall after a pregnancy period of about eight months. It only gives birth to one baby at a time.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱偶蹄(ぐうてい)目シカ科の動物。アッサム地方、ミャンマー(ビルマ)、カンボジア、海南島などに分布し、3亜種がある。頭胴長約1.8メートル、体高1.07~1.2メートル、体重80~150キログラム、角(つの)は最長1.13メートルの記録がある。毛色は季節によって異なり、冬季は暗褐色、夏には黄褐色となる。また、雌雄でも体色がわずかに異なり、雌は明るい褐色であるが、成獣の雄は暗褐色から黒色に近くなる。子には白斑(はくはん)がある。開けた低木地帯や河川、丘陵の間の平たい土地を好み、小群で暮らし、早朝、薄暮に採食に出る。3~4月が発情期で、約8か月の妊娠期間ののち秋に出産する。1産1子である。
