Also known as threadworms. A thread-like parasitic worm belonging to the nematode family. There are many types, but in Japan, the bancroftian and B. malayan types are found scattered throughout southern Kyushu and other areas. They are transmitted by mosquitoes such as Culex pipiens. Adult worms can reach 10 cm in length, and parasitize the lymphatic system, producing larvae (microfilariae) that appear in the blood, especially at night. The main symptoms are irregular bouts of fever, which can become chronic and lead to elephantiasis. Treatments include diethylcarbamazine and mafalzole. Dog filariasis is transmitted by Aedes and Anopheles mosquitoes, and parasitizes the heart. The larvae of filaria species that parasitize animals such as cattle can cause lower back paralysis in goats and sheep. → Related topics Anthelmintics | Nematodes | Notifiable infectious diseases | Endemic diseases Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
