The Fenian Brotherhood was formed in the United States in April 1859 in response to the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB, formed in March 1858), a secret military organization with the goal of establishing Irish independence and a republic. When John O'Mahony (1816-1877), a Gaelic scholar, formed the Fenian Brotherhood in America, he named it after the Fianna, a legendary ancient Irish band of warriors.
