Hayama [village] - Hayama

Japanese: 葉山[村] - はやま

A village in Takaoka County in the mid-west of Kochi Prefecture. Population 4,630 (1995). The Shinjo River originates near Kakusho Mori (1,100m) on the northwest edge of the village, flows east along a fault line running east-west, enters Susaki City and empties into Susaki Bay. River terraces have developed along the coast. Mountains line the north, west, and south, and the area has long been known as a producer of handmade Japanese paper, with paper mulberry and mitsumata trees being cultivated. The main industries are agriculture and forestry, and in addition to rice, mandarin oranges, ginger, chives, and other vegetables are cultivated, and high-quality cedar and cypress timber is also produced.

高知県中西部，高岡郡の村。人口4630(1995)。村の北西端，鶴松（かくしよう）森(1100m)近くに源を発する新荘川が，東西に走る断層線に沿って東流，須崎市に入って須崎湾に注ぐ。沿岸には河岸段丘が発達。北，西，南の三方は山が連なり，古くからコウゾ，ミツマタの栽培が盛んで，手すき和紙の産地として知られた。農林業を主とし，米作のほかミカン，ショウガ，ニラなどの野菜の栽培が行われ，杉，ヒノキの良材も産する。
