… Type I tails are gaseous and contain carbon monoxide ions (CO + ) , and their spectrum shows strong emission lines in the violet to green wavelength range. In 1950, German L. Biermann proposed the idea that the gas coming out of the coma under the pressure of the sun's light is carried by a flow of charged particles called the "solar wind" at speeds of 200 to 1,000 km per second. Some tails were longer than 300 million km. …
