Born: June 11, 1790 in Paris
[Died] May 8, 1870. Paris. French critic and politician. A precocious genius, at the age of 26 he became a professor at the University of Paris (1816-30), where he lectured on history and literature. In 1821 he became a member of the Académie Française. From 1827 he became active in politics, and served as Minister of Education (39-40, 40-44). His main works include the critique Éloge de Montaigne (12), Cromwell (19), and lectures Tableau de la littérature française (40-46).
