Four rivers, the Xiangjiang, Zishui, Yuanjiang, and Lishui, flow into the lake from the south and west, and from the north, a large amount of muddy water flows into the lake from four ports, Songzi, Taiping, Guchi, and Zhaoxian, during the flood season of the Yangtze River, and flows back into the Yangtze River from Chenglingji in Yueyang County. The lake surface changes greatly with the seasons, but the large amount of mud and sand carried in every year from the four ports has formed a relatively wide sandbar from east to west, dividing the original Dongting Lake into a group of small lakes and marshes, such as East Dongting, South Dongting, West Dongting, and Datong Lake. …
