〘Noun〙① Chanting the name of Amida Buddha a million times over a period of seven to ten days. It is said to have originated from the ancient Chinese monk Doshaku . In the Japanese Jodo sect, it is said to have been first performed by Zen'akuen, the eighth abbot of Chion-ji Temple, at the decree of Emperor Go-Daigo in 1331 ( the first year of the Genko era).
