Himezobora (Princess Ezo Snail) - Himezobora (English name) Neptunea arthritica
A gastropod shell of the Bucconidae family (illustration). The shell is thick, spindle-shaped, 11 cm high and 7 cm wide, and is sturdy. It has six layers. The first layer is nipple-like, then swells and has a row of knob-like tubercles, which may be barely noticeable in some individuals or may be so prominent that they form fin-like protrusions. The shell color ranges from brown to purple-brown. The body layer is large and rounded. The opening of the shell is wide and oval. The inner surface is purple-brown with thin lines. The water canal groove is short and open. The lid is leathery, thick, and blackish brown. It is found north of Mikawa Bay in Honshu, and is often found on rocky reefs below the intertidal zone.
