...Deposits in commercial banks only acquired the characteristics of currency when the money-saving settlement system of the Reichsbank Transfer and Settlement Agency was completed. When World War I broke out in 1914, the Reichsbank stopped converting into gold, and the era of the "paper mark" began. The Reichsbank also carried out wartime finance under the slogan "total financial mobilization," but inflationary expansion of the amount of monetary circulation was unavoidable.
