Inokuchi

...The city center is located in the northern part of the Nobi Plain, at the top of the alluvial fan of the Nagara River. During the Sengoku period, Saito Dosan built a castle on Kinkazan (Inabayama) and developed into a castle town. In 1567 (Eiroku 10), Oda Nobunaga defeated the Saito clan and entered the castle, changing the name of the town, which had been called Inokuchi, to Gifu, and bringing in artisans and merchants to make the castle town prosper. After the Oda clan was defeated, the castle was moved to Kano, a post station on the Nakasendo road, and in the Edo period Gifu started anew as a town for townspeople in the Owari domain, and also served as a distribution center for goods shipped by boat on the Nagara River as Taniguchi settlement. ...

…中心市街地は濃尾平野北部，長良川の扇状地の扇頂部に位置し，戦国時代斎藤道三が金華山(稲葉山)に城を築き，その城下町から発達した。1567年(永禄10)織田信長が斎藤氏を亡ぼして入城し，それまで井ノ口と称していた町を岐阜と改め，職人，商人を集めて城下町を繁栄させた。織田氏が亡びて城は中山道宿場の加納に移され，江戸時代の岐阜は尾張藩領の町人の町として再出発し，また谷口集落として長良川の舟運による物資の集散地の機能を果たした。…
