A membranous green alga with a body made of a single layer of cells, this seaweed of the family Monochaetaceae is widely distributed in warm seas south of the Kanto region (illustration). It grows on rocks in the upper intertidal zone from winter to spring, and its body grows large and forms large colonies, especially in calm areas such as inland bays. Its body shape is almost circular, and it can reach 4 to 10 cm or more in size, and as it grows, it develops wrinkles and cracks. A similar species, M. latissimum (Kütz.) Wittr., is distributed along the central Japanese coast and in the Seto Inland Sea, and has a thin, larger body that is often perforated.
