A city in the province of Imperia in the Liguria region of northern Italy. Population 60,787 (1981). Facing the Mediterranean Sea, it is the most famous international tourist city on the west coast of the Riviera, which has a mild climate and beautiful scenery. Its history dates back to Roman times, but from the Middle Ages onwards it was mainly under the control of the Republic of Genoa, and in the 12th century it became a base for maritime traffic. Its development as a tourist destination began in the second half of the 19th century, and today it is lined with luxury hotels and villas, and has numerous entertainment facilities including a public casino. After World War II, a song festival has been held every year to attract visitors to escape the cold in the winter.

イタリア北部リグリア州インペリア県の都市。人口6万0787(1981)。地中海に面し，温和な気候で風光明美なリビエラの西海岸で最も有名な国際的観光都市である。その歴史はローマ時代にさかのぼるが，中世以後は主としてジェノバ共和国の支配に服し，12世紀には海上交通の基地となった。観光地としての発展は19世紀後半に始まり，今日では高級ホテルや別荘が建ち並び，公営カジノをはじめ数々の娯楽施設を備えている。第2次大戦後は，冬季の避寒客を集めるための歌謡祭が毎年開催されている。
