German pianist. One of the most representative pianists of the first half of the 20th century. Born in Lyon, France, to German parents, he grew up on the Italian Riviera in the north. After returning to Germany, he studied at the Hannover Conservatory from 1911 to 1916. After serving in the First World War, he made his Berlin debut in 1920 and began his full-fledged performance career in Europe and the United States. In his book Modern Piano Performance (1931), co-authored with his teacher at the Hannover Conservatory, K. Reimer (1858-1944), he advocated performance that was faithful to the score. Along with violinist Szigeti, he was called a "New Objectivity", but his performances were also known for his outstanding memory ability, which hid deep emotion in his restrained and clear interpretations, and he left behind excellent performances of a wide repertoire, including modern French music by Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy, and Ravel. His works include a memoir (published in 1963), piano pieces, and songs. He came to Japan in 1953. → Related article Yepes Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
