German pianist. One of the most representative pianists of the first half of the 20th century. Born in Lyon, France, to German parents, he grew up on the Italian Riviera in the north. After returning to Germany, he studied at the Hannover Conservatory from 1911 to 1916. After serving in the First World War, he made his Berlin debut in 1920 and began his full-fledged performance career in Europe and the United States. In his book Modern Piano Performance (1931), co-authored with his teacher at the Hannover Conservatory, K. Reimer (1858-1944), he advocated performance that was faithful to the score. Along with violinist Szigeti, he was called a "New Objectivity", but his performances were also known for his outstanding memory ability, which hid deep emotion in his restrained and clear interpretations, and he left behind excellent performances of a wide repertoire, including modern French music by Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy, and Ravel. His works include a memoir (published in 1963), piano pieces, and songs. He came to Japan in 1953.

ドイツのピアノ奏者。20世紀前半を代表するピアノ奏者の一人。ドイツ人を両親にフランスのリヨンに生まれ，イタリア北部のリビエラで育つ。ドイツに帰国後，1911年−1916年ハノーファー音楽院に学ぶ。第１次世界大戦に従軍後1920年のベルリン・デビューから本格的な演奏活動を開始し欧米各地で活躍。ハノーファー音楽院時代の師K.ライマー〔1858-1944〕との共著《現代ピアノ演奏法》（1931年）では楽譜に忠実な演奏を提唱。バイオリン奏者のシゲティなどとともに〈新即物主義〉の名で呼ばれたが，その演奏は抑制のきいた明晰(めいせき)な解釈の中に深い情感を秘める抜きん出た暗譜能力でも知られ，モーツァルトやベートーベン，ドビュッシー，ラベルなどのフランス近代音楽ほか幅広いレパートリーにすぐれた演奏を残した。回想録（1963年出版），ピアノ曲，歌曲などの作品もある。1953年に来日。
