A perennial plant of the Saxifragaceae family, with only one species in the genus, native to the Korean Peninsula and northeastern China, which is often cultivated in Japan for decorative purposes (illustration). It is also called Tancho-sou. It is deciduous, with a thick horizontal rhizome from which new leaves and flower stalks emerge every spring. The leaves have long stalks measuring 20-30 cm, and are hairless, along with the blades. The leaf blades are deeply palmately lobed like maples and fatsias, green on the upper side and pale green on the underside, with prominent veins. In early spring, it produces many white flowers in cymes, the branches of which initially curl outwards. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
