A cloth for painting. Generally, linen is coated with glue and water, and then coated with zinc oxide dissolved in oil. The degree of paint absorption varies depending on the type of oil and how it is dissolved. There is also a distinction between coarse and fine depending on the thickness of the thread. The size is expressed by a number, and is divided into figure type (F), landscape type (P), and seascape type (M) depending on the length of the short side of the rectangle. The types currently used in Japan include No. 3 F (27.3 cm x 22.0 cm), No. 6 F (40.9 cm x 31.8 cm), No. 6 P (40.9 cm x 27.3 cm), and No. 6 M (40.9 cm x 24.2 cm). A special name is thumbhole (22.7 cm x 15.8 cm). Canvas has been widely used in Europe since the 17th century.

絵を描くための布。一般には麻布に膠(にかわ)水をひき，さらに亜鉛華を油で溶いたものを塗る。油の種類，溶き方の違いで絵具の吸収度が異なる。糸の太さにより荒目，細目の区別もある。大きさは号数で表し，長方形の短辺の長さにより人物型（F），風景型（P），海景型（M）に分けられる。現在日本で用いられているものは，３号F（27.3cm×22.0cm），６号F（40.9cm×31.8cm），６号P（40.9cm×27.3cm），６号M（40.9cm×24.2cm）など。特殊な呼び方としてサムホール（22.7cm×15.8cm）がある。キャンバスがヨーロッパで盛んに用いられたのは17世紀以降。
