In ancient Greece, festivals such as the Olympic Games were held on a national scale, bringing about national unity as seen in the Persian Wars in the 5th century BC. In addition, the youth of the polis (city-state) were educated in reading, writing, arithmetic, mousikē (music and literature), and gymnastikē (physical education), and these also adopted festival events. The place where physical education was practiced was called a palaistra, and was often attached to the gymnasium where the general public played sports. …
