1753‐1828 English illustrator and printmaker, especially a proponent of wood engraving. At the age of 14 he became an apprentice to R. Beilby, an engraver in his hometown of Newcastle. He established his fame with his illustrations for Descriptive Description of Quadrupeds (1790) and two volumes of The Atlas of British Birds (1797, 1804). The wood engraving he put to practical use developed as illustrations for newspapers and magazines due to its ability to express minute details that rival those of copperplate engraving, and the ease of printing due to the use of relief printing like movable type. His illustrations of animals and birds are meticulously depicted, even down to the texture of their fur and feathers, and are given a sense of life against the backdrop of trees and bushes.
