Utagawa Toyokuni (III)

...The play premiered in March 1862 (Bunkyu 2) at Edo Ichimura-za Theatre, with Ichimura Uzaemon 13 (later Onoe Kikugoro 5) as Benten-kozo, Seki Sanjuro 3 as Nihondayemon, and Nakamura Shikan 4 as Nangō Rikimaru. Inspired by the actor mitate-e (portraits) of Utagawa Toyokuni 3, the play uses the names of the original Nihondayemons and other characters, and involves Aoto Fujitsuna. The opening act, Kamakura Hase-dera, and the second act, Mikoshi-ga-take, depict how Benten-kozo Kikunosuke, Nangō Rikimaru, Tadanobu Rihei, and Akaboshi Jūzabō form a gang of five thieves led by Nihondayemon, but the highlight is the third act, the scene at Hamamatsuya, and onwards. ...

…1862年(文久2)3月江戸市村座で，弁天小僧を13世市村羽左衛門(後の5世尾上菊五郎)，日本駄右衛門を3世関三十郎，南郷力丸を4世中村芝翫（しかん）らが初演。3世歌川豊国の役者見立絵にヒントを得て，在来の日本駄右衛門らの人名をつかい，青砥藤綱をからませた白浪物。序幕鎌倉初瀬寺（はせでら）と2幕目御輿ヶ岳（みこしがたけ）では，弁天小僧菊之助，南郷力丸，忠信利平，赤星十三郎が日本駄右衛門を首領とする五人組盗賊団をつくる経緯が描かれるが，眼目は3幕目〈浜松屋の場〉以下。…
