In 1832, he became professor at the University of Neuchâtel. From 1833 to 1844, he published a large volume called "Recherches sur les poissons fossiles" (Researches on fossil fish), in which he named the coelacanth and other fish. He then studied glaciers, and in 1840 published "Études sur les glaciers" (Researches on glaciers), which created a sensation by proposing the existence of a large ice sheet covering the European continent and the concept of ice ages.
