Kuwano-dera Temple

Japanese:
Kuwano-dera Temple

This Tendai sect temple is located in Kuwanomiji, Azuchi-cho, Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture. It is located halfway up the 433-meter Kinugasazan mountain. It is said to have been founded in 677 (the 6th year of Emperor Tenmu's reign) by Fujiwara Kamatari's son Joue, at the request of Emperor Tenji. The temple's name comes from the fact that Joue brought back mulberries from China and planted them to teach sericulture. It flourished as a place of prayer for successive emperors, but gradually fell into ruin. It was rebuilt in 1576 (Tensho 4) by Oda Nobunaga, who built Azuchi Castle. After the late Edo period, the temple lost many buildings to fires and storms, and currently contains the main hall (a national important cultural property) and the founder's hall, which show the architectural style of the Momoyama period. The principal image of the temple, Yakushi Nyorai, is known locally as Kuwamine Yakushi and is worshipped as a divine image that heals incurable diseases. There are two volumes of the picture scroll "Kuwamineji Engi" that depict the miracles of Yakushi Nyorai, and it has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
