A small annual plant of the Cyperaceae family. It is found in Japan, the Korean peninsula, Taiwan, India, Malaysia, etc., and commonly grows in wetlands and paddy fields. The stems grow in large numbers, are thin and whisker-like, and are about 20 cm tall. They have no leaves. Flowers bloom from early summer to autumn, with spikelets about 5 mm in size, ovate to narrow ovate, at the top of the stem. The scales, which are modified bracts, are ovate and purple-brown, and the perianths are needle-like, with 5 to 6 in all.
