Parian (English spelling)

Japanese: パリアン（英語表記）parian

During the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines, this term mainly referred to the Chinese residential area in Manila. It could also refer to the Chinese residential areas in Cebu, Naga, Vigan, etc., or the Japanese residential area in Manila, but it was generally used to refer to the Chinese residential area along the south bank of the Pasig River in Manila. There have been several theories about the origin of the word, but the most likely theory at present is that it is an archaic Tagalog word. Alcaicería (Spanish for "raw silk market") is often used as a synonym, because the largest commodity handled by the Chinese in Parian was Chinese raw silk.

スペイン統治時代のフィリピンで，おもにマニラの中国人居住地区を指した言葉。セブやナガ，ビガンなどの中国人居住地区や，マニラの日本人居住地区を指す場合もあったが，一般にはマニラのパシグ河口南岸沿いの中国人居住地区の呼称として用いられた。語源については，従来諸説があったが，現在はタガログ古語説が最も有力である。同義語として，しばしばアルカイセリーアalcaicería(スペイン語で〈生糸市場〉)が用いられたが，それはパリアンで中国人が取り扱った最大の商品が中国産生糸だったからである。
