A marine fish belonging to the order Perciformes and family Parrotfish. It is found south of the Ryukyu Islands, in Indonesia, and the Marshall Islands. Its body is long and low, with a sharply pointed front. The rear end of its caudal fin is straight, with thread-like extensions at both the top and bottom. The female's entire body is red, hence its name, but the male is green, with light green edges to its scales, and has blue-green spots on the ventral side of its head. It grows to 50 centimeters in length. It changes sex from protogynous (female to male). It is often found alone on the outer slopes of coral reefs. It spawns in pairs. It prefers to eat small algae. It tastes good. [Kunio Amano] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
