An onmyoji who appears in the legend of Yoshitsune. He is also called "Oniichi Hogen." His existence is unknown. In "Gikeiki," he lives in Ichijo Horikawa in Kyoto and keeps the famous military strategy book "Rokuto Sanryaku" in his secret possession. Ushiwakamaru tries to see it but is not allowed to, so he makes a pact with Hogen's youngest daughter, and with the help of the daughter, he obtains "Rokuto" and memorizes every single character. Hogen is furious and sends his sister's husband, Tankai, to pursue them, but is killed in return. The daughter dies from grief at being separated from Ushiwakamaru, and Hogen is overcome with grief. Oniichi Hogen also appears in the fairy tale "Hangan Miyako Banashi" and the Noh song "Tankai." In Joruri, "Oniichi Hogen Sanryaku Maki" is famous, and it was later made into Kabuki. 義経伝説に登場する陰陽師。「おにいちほうげん」ともいう。実在は不明。『義経記』では,京の一条堀川に住み,天下の兵法書『六韜三略』を秘蔵している。牛若丸はそれを見ようとしたが許されず,法眼の末娘と契りを交わし,娘のはからいで『六韜』を手に入れ1字も余さず覚えてしまう。法眼は激怒し,妹婿の湛海を追っ手に差し向けたが,返り討ちにあった。娘は牛若丸と別れた悲しみのあまり死んでしまい,法眼は悲しみにうち沈む。鬼一法眼はお伽草子『判官都ばなし』や謡曲「湛海」にも登場し,浄瑠璃では「鬼一法眼三略巻」が有名で,のちに歌舞伎にもなった。
