The capital of Honduras and the department of Francisco Morazan. It is located on a mountain plateau in the south-central part of the country, at an altitude of about 1000m. It has a mild tropical highland climate, with an average temperature of 19°C in January and 24°C in May. The annual precipitation is about 1000mm, falling mainly from May to October. It was built on the slopes of Mount Picacho around 1579 as a gold and silver mining center. In 1880, it was designated the capital of the Republic of Honduras, replacing Comayagua in the northwest. In 1938, it was merged with Comayaguerra on the opposite bank of the Choluteca River to form a special administrative region. In addition to the presidential palace and the parliament, the city has the National Autonomous University of Honduras, founded in 1847, and an 18th century cathedral. There are industries such as textiles, sugar refining, and tobacco, but they are small-scale and most of them are for local consumption. It is one of the few capital cities in the world without a railway, and transportation is mainly by air, with the Toncontin International Airport located nearby. Freight is mainly transported by road, with the Interoceanic Highway connecting the Pacific coast and the Caribbean coast passing through it. Population: 990,600 (2009).
