A city in the southern part of New Zealand's North Island. It is located 140km (by road) northeast of Wellington, in the eastern part of the Manawatu Plains, on the right bank of the Manawatu River. Population: 74,000 (1993). With the agricultural and pastoral areas of the Manawatu Plains as its hinterland, it is a distribution center for agricultural products, and various industries such as food processing, textiles, and machinery are carried out here. There are technical schools and research institutes, including Massey University, and an airport (for domestic flights). Founded in 1866, it was incorporated as a city in 1930.
