A small village in Rajshahi District, western Bangladesh. The ruins of Somapura Mahavihara, the largest Buddhist monastery in Asia, remain. It was founded by Dharmapala, the second king of the Pala dynasty, which flourished from the 8th to 11th centuries. It is known that within the approximately 300m square wall, there were 177 monks' cells and a cross-shaped temple with stairs on all four sides in the center of the inner courtyard. The approximately 2,800 unglazed clay reliefs embedded in the base are valuable materials for Pala dynasty art. The site was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1985.
