Sirmium

A fortress town on the Sava River in the ancient Roman province of Pannonia. Today, Sremska Mitrovica is located west of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. It became part of the Roman Empire at the end of the 1st century BC and was the site of a Roman military base. A colony (colonia) was established here under Emperor Vespasian (reigned 69-79). During the later Imperial period, it was often the imperial seat of government and the residence of high-ranking officials. Many decrees were issued here. It was also an important transportation hub connecting with the Danube region and a manufacturing center for weapons and coins.

古代ローマの属州パンノニアのサバ川河畔にあった要塞都市。現在はセルビアの首都ベオグラード西方にあるスレムスカミトロビツァ。前1世紀末ローマ領となり，ローマ軍の基地が置かれた。皇帝ウェスパシアヌス (在位 69～79) のとき植民市 (コロニア ) が建てられた。帝政後期にはしばしば皇帝所在地となり，高官も居住。多くの法令がここから発布された。ドナウ地方とを結ぶ交通の要地，武器，貨幣の製造地としても重要であった。
