A collection of prose from the Song dynasty in China. Seven volumes. Edited by Xie Fangde. It contains 69 works that are model pieces of writing, mainly from the classical Chinese of the Tang and Song dynasties. Of the 15 authors selected, the most works were by Han Yu of the Tang dynasty with 32, followed by Su Shi of the Song dynasty with 12, and Liu Zongyuan of the Tang dynasty and Ouyang Xiu of the Song dynasty with five each. This book was created as a reference book for the civil servant examination (Imperial Examination), with one character for each of the seven volumes, from the phrase "Hou Wang Xiang Shu Aran ya" ("The Hou and the Wang are the Ministers of the Republic of China"), which means that if you work hard enough, you can become a high-ranking official. Therefore, by studying the first volume in order, the book is structured so that students can gradually acquire advanced writing skills. In Japan, where there is no imperial examination system, this book was widely read during the Edo period as a composition textbook or a collection of masterpieces of writing.
