In Catholic theology, one of the three divine virtues (faith, hope, and charity). It is a translation of the Greek word agapē in the New Testament, but in Catholic theology it refers to the love of man for God in response to God's love being given to man. Augustine saw charity as the virtue that unites man to God, and medieval theologians, especially Thomas Aquinas, saw charity as the foundation and basis of all the other virtues.
