Russian conductor. He studied composition and conducting at his hometown's Leningrad Conservatory, and from 1932 he served as the conductor of the Kirov Theatre in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). In 1938, he won first place in the Soviet Union's national conducting competition, and in the same year was appointed permanent conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then, he has devoted himself to improving the orchestra's standards, and has developed it into one of the world's leading orchestras. In 1973 (Showa 48), he came to Japan for the first time with the orchestra. His grand-scale performance style, which places emphasis on composition, is dignified, and he has broken new ground, especially in his performances of Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich.
